Around Cabier

What to do in Spice Island Grenada

Doing nothing slowly for a day or two or three is not a bad option. It is what the Caribbean and Cabier is all about.

Many of our guests find their day starts to fill up once they have had a swim in the warm sea, lie on a beach lounger, possibly a massage, maybe then it's time for lunch and then another swim, afterwards a sit on your veranda in one of the swing seats enjoying the view or around the pool reading a good book. Goodness me its nearly time for a pre-dinner drink and watch the fire flies as dusk creeps in, afterwards gazing at the star canopy overhead before dinner.

The more energetic can enjoy snorkelling in the sheltered waters of the bay or walking along the paths that wind around the coast or up in the rainforest, guided or not. Nature lovers can see pelicans, frigate birds, egrets, herons and the occasional osprey fishing as well as humming birds, doves and butterflies in the garden without stirring from their veranda. There are local knowledgeable guides who organise trips to the magnificent rainforest that covers much of central Grenada, to see waterfalls, beautiful flowers, birds, butterflies, monkeys.

Even though you are supposed to be really chilling out and winding down Cabier style (the locals call it limin') - you may be tempted to do a little inter-island visiting using the hydrofoil or local flight up to the neighbouring Grenadine island of Carriacou. A day of catamaran sailing up the coast, a sunset rum punch cruise, or a boat snorkelling trip or diving Grenada's reefs and wrecks, all of which can be organised by Cabier.

A day in St George's wandering around the beautiful harbour with its shops, restaurants and market, taking in its history and views from its historic forts guarding the harbour is fun. Cabier organises tours to the rainforest with waterfall swimming, as well as to the other main attractions on the island, nutmeg plantations, cocoa estate at Belmont and the Seven Rivers Rum distillery - where they still use 18th century methods and a water wheel to produce their rum. All these are on our side of the island and are easily reached from Two Bays.

Carnival is the first week of August. It is colourful, noisy with bands, and exuberant with locals parading and dancing in bizarre costumes to loud Soca music around the harbour front. Join in the night parade "Midnight Mass" watched and participated in by locals and visitors alike or Juvet at La Tante - one of our local villages - with of course lots of local food, drink, and very loud music.

Grenada is a stunningly beautiful island with friendly locals who like to chat. Hire a car (Cabier will arrange - minimum 3 days hire - delivered to Cabier or picked up at airport) and go and explore the spectacular interior and coasts. Shop in the markets for local produce to tempt you to cook, and buy spices, which make great gifts. Driving is not difficult in Grenada and most places of interest in Grenada are within a short drive from Cabier.
