Getting Out and AboutFor exploring the island there is local jeep hire delivered to Cabier for a minimum of 3 days hire at around £30 (USD $50) per day and Bruno runs individual island tours from Cabier. Local minibuses to Grenville and St George's are frequent and cheap, as are taxis. Living CostsSo having – we hope – seriously aroused your interest about going to Two Bays and Cabier, we realise what can put people off going independently to the Caribbean is a concern about the cost of living when you are there. We thought the only way to address this concern is by example. The advantage of Two Bays is that you can dip in and out of self catering whenever you want. But – ok so you do not want to cook when you are on holiday - what will it cost to eat and drink for a week at Cabier’s bar and restaurant? Self catering is easy at Two Bays as in all our other holiday houses. The villa and the studios are fully equipped to be a home from home, right down to the salad spinner and garlic crusher. As well as having a gas stove, microwave and all the other kitchen equipment you might possibly need to properly self cater, you always have the option to eat at Cabier Ocean Lodge restaurant on the terrace overlooking the sea. Cabier Self CateringWhilst most people who have self catered on holiday before know roughly how much it costs to self cater in the UK, France or Italy, it can be a big unknown and a worry about how much it costs to live in the Caribbean totally or partially self catering if you have not done it before. The following, from our recent experience, might help you assess how much it might cost. During a recent two week stay (April 2010), we self catered and ate certain meals at Cabier Ocean Lodge as a matter of choice, although we could easily have self catered all of the holiday. Currency rates are converted roughly at USD $1.50 =£1 and ECD $4 =£1. Self Catering InformationGrenville, our biggest local town, is 20 minutes away by car and has several supermarkets (more local) and a vibrant fruit/veg/fish and meat market. If you are not hiring a vehicle then Bruno the chef at the Lodge goes in every other day to buy fresh produce for the restaurant and will take you there. There is also a regular minibus service from Crochu village. We self catered lunch each day preparing a mixture of things from vegetables, bought from the ladies in Grenville market, through to tuna salad, bacon, lettuce, tomato and avocado salads and chicken. There is plenty to buy either frozen (imported) or local – chicken/pork/goat/beef from supermarkets or in the market. Chicken is obviously plentiful and is not expensive. Vegetables are whatever is in season and there are usually aubergine /peppers/lettuce/ tomatoes/avocado/sweet potato/beetroot/spring onions/onions/herbs as well as more local vegetables such as breadfruit, plantains etc – all available from a ladies with market stalls at around $ECD 4 (£1 stg) a pound. Fruit is plentiful: Mangoes, oranges, bananas, paw paw, passion fruit, papaya and pineapples are in season several times a year, often sold from roadside stalls in villages and cost around ECD$5 (£1.25) for a number of each. Grenville also has a fish market but the fishermen from our local village have various fish to sell and buying direct from them is not expensive. Fish will have been caught that morning. Expect to pay ECD $12/$20 for a fish that would feed 4 to 6 persons. Wine works out at around £5 to £10 a bottle depending on variety and country. Carib beer is cheap at around ECD $2 a bottle, as are soft drinks if bought in the shops. Grenada has a significant population who are returnees from UK/USA/Canada - so in and around St Georges (45 minutes) there are well stocked shops and supermarkets to serve them and the yachting community with a lot of the goods you would find in the UK or USA. There will occasionally be shortages of certain imported items depending on when the last shipment came in (it is an island) but we have not come across anything that we couldn’t find an alternative for in one shop or another. Eating and Drinking at Cabier Ocean LodgeThe best way to illustrate the costs of eating at Cabier Ocean Lodge is to review our last bill from the Lodge restaurant for a two week stay at Two Bays in April 2010. The following will help: The restaurant at Cabier does a good breakfast – coffee/juice/egg/fruit/toast/jam/cheese/tomatoes /salami for $USD 10 – (£6.70). Lovely as it is to eat breakfast on their terrace overlooking the ocean, you can also do breakfast inexpensively yourself sitting enjoying the view from your own veranda. Dinner averaged USD $25 (£16.70) per head (it did include half a lobster each one night). 8 bottles of wine averaged USD$19 (£12.70) each and 28 cocktails (Iris makes really large ones) averaged USD$ 5.63 (£3.75). Soft drinks were USD $2.25 (£1.50) and Carib beer USD $2.25 (£1.50). You can get a Roti (filled chapatti with either chicken or fish curry) with salad for lunch at USD$5.87 (£3.90). We hope that helps to gauge the costs of Caribbean self catering and eating out locally for your holiday budgeting. As you can see costs at the restaurant are actually cheaper than in a lot of provincial areas in France, and self catering is not a problem as buying the ingredients for a good meal is cheaper than the restaurant.
